I’m Richard James. I’ve been, at various times since the mid 1960s, a chess player, teacher, tutor, organiser, writer, historian, promoter, webmaster and much else.
You may know me as the co-author (with the late and much missed Mike Fox) of The (Even More) Complete Chess Addict, as the co-founder and organiser of Richmond Junior Chess Club for over 30 years, where I worked closely with future grandmasters such as Luke McShane and Jonathan Rowson, as the author of the best-selling Chess for Kids, or just as a long-standing member of Richmond & Twickenham Chess Club in South West London.
This is one of my current projects: some of the material here might, at some point, turn into a book. Who knows?

The Chess Heroes project offers a series of books designed for anyone who wants to study chess in a systematic way.
Pawns in the Game is a substack looking, in part through my personal experiences, at the intersection between chess and childhood. You’re more than welcome to subscribe: it’s free.
